How the Visibility Score works

Last updated September 28, 2026

What it measures

The Visibility Score is a number from 0 to 100 for one AI engine in one run. It answers: across the prompts you track, how often does this engine recommend your brand, and how well?

  • It measures your brand on its own, not against competitors. For that, see share of voice.
  • Every score comes with a margin of error, shown as ±.
  • Each engine card also shows the raw count behind the score, e.g. “Mentioned in 1 of 24 answers”.

The four parts

PartWhat it countsWeight
PresenceShare of answers that mention your brand at all40%
RankHow high you're listed when an answer lists brands in order: first place counts fully, second counts half, third a third35%
SentimentHow positively the answer describes you, from negative to positive15%
CitationsShare of answers that link to your own website (working links only)10%

Rank and sentiment are averaged over only the answers that mention you. A lukewarm mention never scores below no mention at all.

The formula

score = 100 × ( presence × (0.4 + 0.35 × rank + 0.15 × sentiment) + 0.1 × citations )

Rank and sentiment are multiplied by presence. How well you're recommended only counts as often as you're recommended. One glowing mention in dozens of answers can't produce a high score.

A worked example

An engine answers your 8 prompts 3 times each, for 24 answers. It names your brand in one of them, lists you first, speaks positively, and links to your site:

PartValue
Presence1 of 24
Rank1.0 (first place, in the one answer that mentions you)
Sentiment1.0 (fully positive)
Citations1 of 24

100 × ( 1/24 × (0.40 + 0.35 + 0.15) + 0.10 × 1/24 ) = 100 × 1.00 / 24 ≈ 4

One perfect answer out of 24 scores about 4. A brand every answer names at first place, positively and with a citation, scores 100.

The score across engines

The score in your run history is the average of the engine scores, with each engine counted equally. Scores are only compared between runs that measured the same set of prompts.

Compared with other tools

Many AI-visibility tools call the share of answers that mention you “visibility” and report rank and tone separately. That number is the “Mentioned in X of Y answers” line on each engine card. The Visibility Score folds rank, tone, and citations in. Because they only count as often as you're mentioned, a strong mention can't lift the score far above how often you appear.
